I follow three simple rules when I'm not the 'official' photographer:

1. Don't get in the way.
2. Don't use your flash.
3. Don't bring your DSLR.

The last one is the most important if you have any intention of having a good time at the wedding.

The first one is the most important if you have any intention of staying friends with the couple.

The second one is the most important if you want to avoid getting smacked in the head by the official photographer.
