Trumpeter Swan L44 and friend

This pair circled overhead for a few minutes. I'm not sure if they were trying to land at the pond near our house to be with chums or if they were taking off and gaining altitude. Regardless, they seem to be mates and in good shape. Harry Lumsden is the neighbour across the soccer pitch who has a rehab pond for swans. It's kind of weird to hear them but we are used to it. Harry's a legend in the trumpeter swan breeding, tagging, and rehab program in Ontario. He, probably more than anyone in the province, is responsible for their comeback. He's 90 now but is still affiliated with the Wye Marsh Conservation Area in Midland after a long career with the Ministry of Natural Resources. The Marsh has a swan sighting reporting program so I'll input the details on L44 and friend. I couldn't get a number or even see a tag on the companion. We're seeing lots of swans now as the annual migration north is under way. A few robins here and there and a couple of redwing blackbirds are the vanguard of many more to come soon.

L43 blipped back in February.
