A Matter of Interpretation

Building on Speke Hall was started by the Norris family in 1530 and was finally completed in 1598. Builders eh?

It was sold in 1795, for the one and only time, when Richard Watt bought it, in a derelict state, from the Norris family. However it was not until 1855 that his descendant, another Richard Watt, moved into the house and it became a family home once again. The last occupant was the daughter of Richard Watt, Adelaide Watt. She died in 1921.

The house, inside and out, is very much a Victorian home and this is how the curatorial team want it to be interpreted. At the moment there are both Tudor and Victorian tours. This gentleman is one of the costumed Tudor guides.
