Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Nina Simone - Save Me (recorded 25 August 1969, New York NY)
My choice from the morning's Cerys Matthews Show is this. Aretha Franklin worked up this improvisational piece together with her bandleader King Curtis and sister Carolyn while recording her first album for Atlantic Records in 1967. It was also put on the B-side of Respect. It was picked up later that year by Julie Driscoll who recorded it for a single with the Brian Auger Trinity, and that was the version I was most familiar with at that time.
Nina Simone's fine version was arranged and conducted by herself and Weldon Irvine while recording the Silk And Soul album in 1969, but was instead placed on the B-side of To Be Young, Gifted And Black. When the album appeared on CD some years later it was added as a bonus track.
