Life in a Northern Town

Elevation

This is my little town of Huddersfield, taken from the elevated (and extremely windy!) vantage point of Castle Hill.

Slightly shaky due to the force 9 gale that was blowing but worth having a look large. Also, a close up here.

Going from left to right, the big white building on the left is the Royal Infimary (across the road from my house), coming down then into the town centre with the brand new Kirklees College Buildings, and sweeping off down Leeds Road towards the gasometer and the John Smith Stadium (which also answers to The Galpharm, The MacAlpine and Leeds Road) - home of the mighty Terriers (the slight bit of blue you can see toward the right).

Just visible in the distance are the wind turbines at Ovenden, as Blipped by Sgwarnog recently.

Evidence of the town's former industrial and affluent past is everywhere. As mentioned in my Blip yesterday though, the mills are alive with the sound of waxing, massaging and flat screen TVs nowadays.

I came here for a 2 year stay in 1988, and seem to be still here. Standing on Castle Hill with views over the town, the Holme Valley, Saddleworth Moor and over into the Peak District never gets boring. Even when it's blowing a hooley.
