The Gazweasel Times

Friday bottom #41

This week it's a Philistine's bum. He's presently being beat up by Samson. I rather like his massive feet.

This statue (obviously at the V&A) depicts Samson Slaying a Philistine. It was carved by Giambologna in around 1562. Giambologna (whose real name was Giovanni Bologna but clearly didn't want to be called John) lived in Florence working in the court of my old friends the Medici Dukes. This was made for Francesco and stood in his garden.

I have to say I do somewhat agree with Samson...I'm not too keen on philistines, myself.

The full size statue is here. I might do Samson's bum next week...which possibly sounds a bit sordid.
