Plant & Tree Pick Up

This afternoon between 2 and 4 p.m. the long awaited plant pick up happened at the county fairgrounds. The New York State Conservation Board has a couple of nurseries in the upstate area where they grow trees and plants native to New York. The goal is to get gardeners and farmers to plant what is non-invasive and good for the wildlife, insects, songbirds and the soil. In a way it counteracts the box stores such as Lowe's and Walmart who sell huge amounts of everything where it grows in our zone, or is invasive or useless to feeding birds and insect. The prices are extremely reasonable. The order sheets go out in January and orders are final in March.
The delivery was handled in a dark shed so this photo is not very interesting. The people here had a chance to buy "leftovers." I had ordered the "Pond" species but picked up an additional bunch of "Songbird" plants. They are in the garage waiting for Saturday planting.

Note to self: next year order cherry, crabapple or plum trees. These were huge and healthy and inexpensive!

Then it started pouring heavy rain (not snow) as we left. On the way home the driver, my friend and neighbour, stopped at Lowe's. She wanted to get a paint sample mixed, but also bought a full shopping cart of blooming plants and shrubs! It all balances out, I guess.
