Opening the hives

This evening Faye and I opened a few of the hives at the University apiary to see how well they had fared during the long winter. We're very pleased with most of them, including "my hive". There are lots of bee eggs and grub.

I was hoping to bring my colony of bees home this weekend, but it's still too early. I'll need to be patient and wait a bit longer for the grub to turn into young bees. This will strengthen the colony and they'll have a better chance of survival with the move. Flitting for bees seems to be just as stressful as it is for humans ;o)
