Sally Mair - Loving life

Monumental

I spotted both of these while loitering with intent(killing time before catching a train) this morning. The first was instantly recognisable as Paolozzi's work even though I could only see the top of it from behind a wall. It's his statue of Newton. I couldn't close enough to get it in better light or detail. It stands outside the British Library in Euston Road. You can read more about it here.

The second sculpture, which at 9m tall is even bigger, is in St Pancras Station by the Eurostar Terminal. It's called the Meeting Place and is by Paul Day. It appears to be rather controversial but I rather liked it! More here

The frieze at the base of the sculpture is incredibly detailed and although I've found some info, I am going to try to find out more about it.
If anybody has time to kill around Kings Cross then the red brick St Pancras Station (railway not underground) is the place to do it. It is so much calmer than Kings Cross, and has nice restaurants and cafes to sit in - there are two floors to explore. There's a piano given by Elton John (didn't see that though) and a statue of John Betjeman who campaigned to save the station. If you want some posh food shopping there's a mini Fortnum's although their cafe is still closed. All in all, a much more calm and restful place to spend time and just 2 minutes away.
My journey home was busy but uneventful apart from the fact that they ran out of teacakes by Peterborough and they were not restocked at Newcastle as promised! A good weekend in spite of that final disappointment!
