Sally Mair - Loving life

Trees in the forest

We wandered the streets of Inverness for a while today before going to catch our train to Edinburgh. I'd decided to treat us to 1st class but sadly a smaller train had been assigned and it had no first class carriages.
I've contacted Scotrail for a refund of the difference. Our main reason for the upgraded travel though was for a bit more space and some quiet. Fortunately, although busy the train wasn't too crowded and we had a table group to ourselves for the journey.
As we were travelling South, I noticed in the forest just before Tomatin, that the track was beautifully lined by Christmas trees of various sizes. They stood out very clearly against the birches behind. Not a piece of tinsel in sight, but they looked beautiful.
Most of our journey was in reduced daylight as we were accompanied by rain. In Perthshire, the fields were really waterlogged and the rivers running high. There's a warning there for more rain over the next 48 hours, hopefully there is not too much damage as a result.
We saw several flocks of geese as we travelled, some as skeins in the air and others in large groups on the ground. We also saw lots of swans, and I thought of them as I read that 12 had been found dead in a park in Glasgow with avian flu the predicted culprit. So very sad to lose them in this way. They think that the recent outbreaks in poultry farms in Scotland may be down to migrating geese.
