Stanger Head

I went to Flotta to look for geese as part of a UK-wide survey this weekend. It isn't a top-rated goose destination. While other surveyors around Orkney got eg 1200 greylag, I got 51. I was on foot but a kind local gave me a lift just as I set off, so he drove out of his way to help out. Being a farmer, he was interested in the survey- the farmers are not too happy at large goose numbers as they impact on pasture. He dropped me near Stanger Head, the southernmost point, and I walked back by roads we hadn't driven. So not many geese but loads of migrant blackbird, redwing, fieldfares, a sparrowhawk, ravens, a woodcock etc.
