Spicy

I said mambo (hello) to the cashier in a shop where we stopped to buy snacks and Dennis remarked that I was really grasping Swahili. I don’t think I was exhibiting much of a range.

Today has been a travel day from Dar es Salaam, reaching Lindi in the south by sunset. We went to a crowded restaurant for food and the Ghana vs Portugal World Cup game was playing. When Ghana scored an equalising goal the crowd erupted wildly. It was so good to witness that celebration of another African country. I cannot imagine England fans ever sharing the joy if Italy or Spain scored. Ghana is not a close neighbour of Tanzania. Africa is the best.

89 minutes had passed and the commentator said ‘it’s all getting very spicy’. Cue at that exact moment the power going out so we couldn’t watch as Ghana tried to salvage the game.

There is a usual pit stop along this journey, pictured. Saidi the driver is somewhere bottom left buying some extremely pungent dried fish.
