Making a Stand

We haven't been in to Leeds for some time but we had amassed a few jobs to do and so went in on the train this morning.  After cuppas and toasted teacakes (and a Tunnocks teacake!) in the Waterstones Café, we walked back to the station via Princes Square and saw this structure.  At first we thought it was scaffolding around the Black Prince but as we came closer we realised it was an installation.  I'm not sure how I feel about it, possibly because it is built around the Black Prince statue which seemed incongruous.  It is made of vertical slices of tree with the bark still attached.  I googled it back home and it is part of Leeds 2023 and is called Making a Stand.  It is designed to represent the ancient forest of Leodis on which Leeds once stood and is intended to draw people in to the centre of the City to socialise.  You can read more about its inception and meaning here.  Apparently it will be removed at the end of the year and the wood repurposed.

It looks like the pigeons are happy with it, maybe they will give the Black Prince a break!
