Kayaking Waupaca chain of lakes

Sunday August 27
Today, the three of us drove down to Waupaca chain of lakes, about an hours drive southeast from Laura’s, to go kayaking. Over 20 lakes comprise the chain of lakes, of different sizes and depths, connected by channels, natural openings and creeks, remnants from the last Ice Age. The smaller lakes where we started from are crystal clear, have little development and are ideal for canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. As we continued our passage through the lakes they became bigger, and more developed, including many gorgeous lakefront holiday homes. These were also open to larger boats, a lot of pontoon boats, but also motor boats. One of the channels between the lakes was very shallow, deep enough for the kayaks to float, but not with us in them, so we had to get out and pull them behind us! We enjoyed a couple of good bird sightings, A green heron and a couple of Sandhill cranes, which I was thrilled to see - unfortunately I had to make do with a back end view - they weren’t being very photogenic, and we were playing hide and seek through a weeping willow! We had a great afternoon’s paddling, then stopped at a waterfront bar/restaurant on the way back for a drink. In the evening we again ate at Laura’s.
