Anne's Daily Encounters

St. Nicolas Church

Got to an Agios Nikolas church and burned there a candle in gratitude for my safe passage across the sea from Crete to Pireos/Athens on mainland Greece.

Yesterday all named Nikos, Nikita and Nikola, Niki, Nikoleta had their nameday; Greeks celebrate their nameday, rather than their birthday.

Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of skippers, shipbuilders, fishermen, and also of prisoners, innocent convicts, lawyers, bailiffs, bankers, dockers, grain merchants, coopers, wine merchants, painters, perfumers, pharmacists, bakers, clerics, suitors, virgins, children , prostitutes and merchants. Many port cities have Saint Nicholas as their patron saint like Amsterdam and Aberdeen and Bari (in Italy).
