Midnight Lament

You are standing at the threshold,
Waiting by the opening door.
As I watch and wait I remember,
A poem you quoted before.

"..what shall we do?
You without me,
I without you."

In the ache of separation,
These lines made you think of Mum
Before long you will be together
All the waiting will be done.

Now I must rewrite those lines,
So apt and sweetly poignant.
As the door behind you closes,
I make my midnight lament:

... what will I do?
I without you,
I without you.

(Lines from Midnight Lamentation, by Harold Munro)
