Wolf In Sheep's Clothing

Sweet and innocent and soft and cuddly are adjectives possibly attributed to chipmunks when seen in this light. But the reality of their presence for homeowners can be devastating. The furry little creatures often burrow under foundations and into sceptic mounds causing untold damage. So it is often with mixed feelings when I see them emerge in the spring.

Elsewhere, I have been observing a northern flicker woodpecker make a nest in the top of this dead tree (see extra). Today, there were two woodpeckers, a larger female and somewhat slimmer male. I'm not sure whether they are mates and the female wants more nesting material, or the male is an unwanted pest. I saw the female go up into the hole, so it's probably her nest.
