La Pasionaria

Statue of the Spanish Communist & Republican Dolores Ibarruri on Custom House Quay, Glasgow dedicated to those who fought in the Spanish Civil War and inscribed with the words " Better to die on your feet than live for ever on your knees", a phrase first used by the Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata but made famouss by her during a miners strike in Asturias in 1934

It is astonishing to think that when it was erected in the 1970s the Glasgow Municipal Tories pledged to tear the statue down when they came back to power in the City Chambers.

Neither of those things ever happened , of course. Instead the unveiling it never had took place in 2010 when it was restored.

The sculptor was the Liverpool based Arthur Dooley.
