The Oyster Plant
A beautiful day. We spent some time in the garden repotting some plants, and in the garage sorting out old college notes.
This is a flower of Salsify, or Oyster plant. The roots are supposed to taste like oysters. A friend gave me some seeds a few years ago, and now Salsify springs up all over the garden! Its Latin name is Tragopogon porrifolius (its specific epithet meaning "leaves like leek"). The flowers open in the morning and close up in the early after noon. (It is closely related to the yellow flowered T pratensis aka Jack- go- to- bed- at-noon.)
This evening, I attended an informative Plantlife talk on Zoom about "No Mow May and creating a wildflower lawn ". I think we have already done quite well with ours with all our cowslips and primroses! Also, there are now two new, and very interesting- looking plants emerging.
