The Old Woman of Inishmaan

Spoiled for choice among amazing images of the day: old cottages, beautifully built stone walls, donkeys, wild flower and birds, stunning coastal scenery. At the very end of the day I spotted this elderly lady bringing in her washing. She seemed to belong to another time. In many ways she embodies the contradictions to be found here, wearing traditional dress but living in a modern bungalow. Half the island, with its tiny walled enclosures has barely changed in hundreds of years. The other half is dotted with recently built homes, with no nod to tradition and with no sense of any planning. It's a microcosm of Ireland as a whole.

PS I was blipped!
