Dark places

This is the inside of the old limekilns in the historic village of Charlestown.
Lime production started here in 1750 and continued until 1956. The quiet coastal village of today differs greatly to greatly to its dirty industrial past. It’s hard to imagine walking along past the harbour with boats bobbing in the sheltered water the black, acrid smoke belching from the top of the kilns and the harbour filled with cargo boats.
