Bridge Party

A year in the rebuilding, the La Fonda Avenue Bridge had a grand opening party this morning, complete with colorful banners, cake and popcorn. The revamped bridge, which spans a major freeway, will carry an estimated 3,000 cars daily, and features new 6-foot-wide bike lanes in both directions along with 6-foot-wide sidewalks. Our ukulele group played for the festivities. Sometimes our fabulous music was obscured by the roaring sounds of traffic from below, and the frequent honking from drivers on the freeway who were happy to see some civilized action overhead after seemingly endless construction activity. But really, who doesnt smile when they see a ukulele?

We all got free raffle tickets. The prize was a chunk of the old bridge. Thankfully, I did not win.
