Cambridge Bay

After twelve days, and 2000 nautical miles we dropped anchor in Cambridge Bay, at the southern end of Victoria Island. This hamlet, also called Iqaluktuuttiaq (like Greenland, all the places in Nunavut have two names too) houses about 1600 people year round, and is a regular stopping point for ships travelling the Northwest Passage.

For us it also marked the end of our voyage, before flying south to Yellowknife, and then to Edmonton.

The final bit of sightseeing from our Zodiacs was the remains of the Maud. This ship was built for Roald Amundsen, and he had hoped to use it to sail the Northeast Passage. This was probably my only chance to see the Maud at Cambridge Bay. Plans are in place to move it back to near where it was built outside Oslo, to join Amundsen’s other ships the Gjoa (used for the Northwest Passage) and the Fram (used for his South Pole expedition).
