Heritage Christchurch Open Day

I went to the recently reopened Heritage Christchurch Hotel set in the iconic 100 year old Old Government Building on Cathedral Square, for the public tour this afternoon.

Heritage Christchurch was designed by renowned founding city architect, Joseph Clarkson Maddison, and is believed to be his crowning work in a career that spanned a half a century in Canterbury.

The Old Government Building, his one remaining working heritage building post the quake, is described as of ‘monumental importance’ to Christchurch’s architectural history and has an intriguing past and a promising future.

The damage done by the February 22, 2011 earthquake was very little, one cracked stained glass panel and one crack in the wall. All the other was just superficial. We were told it was because of all the earthquake strengthening done a few years ago otherwise things may have been different!
