Textbook Collection

While my students wrote an in-class essay today, I checked the pages in their books to see that they have been doing the work. If I don't collect their books, they don't do the work. Sounds like stellar students, right? Nah!

When the semester ends, though, my experience has been that students thank me for requiring them to do the exercises in the textbook. They usually proclaim that they've never learned so much in one class during all of their schooling. I gently remind them that they learned so much because I require them to do the work.
