Tay Ghillie

The Hut

4.4 degrees today - very wet and windy.

This is not just any hut. No, it's inside the fishing hut at the Newtyle Beat on the River Tay. But it's even more than that.. It has at one point been a Curling Club Hut and even a Golf Pavilion. It was first opened to the public as the Dunkeld & Birnam Golf Club Pavilion in 1892. Then with the outbreak of the First World War the golf course was needed by the army for practicing manoeuvres and post 1917 by the government for food production. With minimal compensation, termination of the tenancy for the gold course was inevitable. Meanwhile the Rohallion and Murthly Curling Club made an offer for the hut and it was subsequently purchased for £15. To complete the circle, the hut was purchased in 1959 by the owners of Newtyle Fishings on the River Tay and moved to its current site where it still sits 122 years after its original construction.

To me it's just a place where I like to shelter during a days fishing and just occasionally to visit for a blether with Andy, the ghillie who looks after the beat. This is a place I am sure my wee girl will become very familiar with!
