The Ice Lovers

No, i haven't been converted into a lover of ice and all things winter...but i am reading a very good book, The Ice Lovers by Jean McNeil. I found it at the library a few days ago, on the special display table where Kate usually does some kind of theme, and the theme was of course ice and snow! I was in the library yesterday and she was so disgusted with our present winter, with weather from hell, that she has changed the theme to Sunny, tropical, palm trees and sea shells, and all the books have tropical getaway types of subject matter. Now, it can be said that what we crave at this time of year is sunshine, heat, sand, clear sparkling water etc....and i am certainly in that category. But, i got to thinking about why i'm actually enjoying this book more than i might be enjoying something about warmth and sexy beaches! This book takes place in the Antarctic, Helen, a historian, has gone there to research the unexplained disappearance of Nara, a scientist who has been missing for 4-5 years, presumed dead! There is of course amazing descriptions of adversity and struggle, dazzling images of the snow and ice covered land, and there is of course the promise of some romantic situation about to take place between Helen and another researcher at the base! The landscape is so totally harsh and unyielding, so dramatically different from anywhere i've ever been (or want to visit) that it highlights how easy i actually have it here! So, to counter balance yesterdays' rant, i give you a small piece of our winter wonderland !

at only -4 today, it felt positively balmy!
