Between fen and mountains

Le Castillet

Today is probably best forgotten! We decided to take the train to Perpignan to watch a film but I had made a mistake with the time and the train was late. Our film was not on and the others had started. We decided to visit a couple of museums but they were unusually closed for renovations! We ended up seeking out the warmth of the library to wait for our train back three hours later. All that would have been as nothing if I hadn't got home to watch the second half of the rugby only to see England lose the game in the last few minutes! Never mind. It will soon be time for final episodes of The Bridge which I am looking forward to.
I took the shot of the Castillet in Perpignan. It is the most famous monument in Perpignan It was once the main entrance to the walled city. Although only a portion of what is left goes back to the time of Aragon domination in the 14th century, this monumental brick gate has a symbolic value for the city. After the walls were knocked down, it stood for sometime as a prison. Its name is a corruption of the French language word Castellet, little castle, which is easily explained by its appearance.
