Westerpark

We visited Het Schip - Museum of Amsterdam School of Architecture this afternoon and walked through another of Amsterdam's beautiful parks along the way. Westerpark was established in 1891 and has remained a park since that time. Today, pretty yellow daffodils were blooming throughout the park.

Westerpark grew in 2003, when Westergasfabriek was annexed to the park and opened to the public. Previously Westergasfabriek was an obsolete gas factory behind the park. It was rejuvenated and decontaminated, buildings were repurposed and trees were planted. Although it was a difficult, long and expensive project, it is now reaping dividends. The area was very busy today as people were enjoying both Westerpark and the market in Westergasfabriek.
