These stone posts are remnants of a country estate that once perched on the edge of this ravine. Built about 100 years ago, not much remains of the summer home that was part of this property. The first settlers in Ohio, in the early 1800s, called the area Penitentiary Gully because, like a penitentiary, the deep ravine was easy to get into but almost impossible to get out. Today the land belongs to one of our local Metroparks and is known as Penitentiary Glen.

Weather update: A beautiful spring day, breezy and warm. For the first time this year, I opened the dining room windows while we ate dinner. Another welcome sign of spring was the bright yellow goldfinches that visited our Bird Buffet. They live here all year round, but today is the first I have seen them wearing their summer plumage.
