Walking …

Woke up to another nice day and then down to breakfast with the other couple staying at the refuge. Simple breakfast, coffee, breads, jams, but satisfying.

A bit cooler and a bit more wind and we set off at the crack of 9.30 for Lac de Trecoplas. Technically only 30 minutes on a more direct route from the hut, but it took us 1.5 hours as we were traversing around the side of a hill, on a trail, often covered with snow. So we took our time and tread carefully, all ok, the snow was pretty soft so even if we had slipped is unlikely there shouldnt have been a problem.

Finally arrived at the lake, and as expected, mostly frozen. Very beautiful. Time to go down and back to the car park, quicker trip, but not hugely so, around 90 minutes down through the forest.

Next stop Boreon to see the wolves at Alpha, Hannah was very keen to see them … http://www.alpha-loup.com. It was actually quite good and we were lucky to see the wolves been fed at 3.30. Apparently they love raw chickens. Interestingly, they were very cagey, not going near the food until the staff were well away, and then lots of interesting behavior in the way they retrieved the food, including fights … As the rain started we stopped to watch several of the films about the wolves. The wolves in Mercantour have repopulated from Italy, and have caused some issues with the local farmers and sheep. However, the park and some farmers are trying to price that man and nature can coexist, looks like they are making a good go at it.

Back to the camp finally around 5, with rain clearing up nicely for our last night. Simple dinner, some packing in advance of our departure tomorrow, and bed.
