The second half of life..

Rock of many names

This local landmark instantly identifies the location as Nelson. What is not so instant though, is what to call it.

Locals usually refer to it as Fifeshire Rock, a name it gained following the grounding of The Fifeshire in 1842. It's official name however, is Arrow Rock, and was named after the Arrow, the first ship to sail into Nelson harbour, in 1841.

With an abundance of cormorants living on it (check out their silhouettes) it has also been referred to as Shag Rock.

And a name I didn't know it had until just now is its Maori name "Urenui". Nothing to do with any wildlife or stranded waka though.......it translates as 'big penis'.
