Dazed and Confused

This Red Crossbill (male, the female is yellow) hit our window and fell to the ground, leaving a fluff of tiny feathers stuck to the glass. I went downstairs and found that he was breathing quite heavily but was still alive. After about 15 minutes it was still sitting there, but I was afraid my husband would run over it as it was right in front of the garage door. So I got some gloves and moved to pick it up an put it in the grass so it could continue to recover. When my hands were about 6 inches away, the bird mustered its strength and flew up into a tree, so I guess it was OK.
Last summer a spruce hen, which is the size of a large chicken, hit the window but was not so lucky.
