Wednesday 10 February 2010: Tight-fisted*
Inspired by this classic shot to blip a mug today, I cast around for one with a slogan worth a second look (most say things like "Mother knows best" or "I have nothing to declare except my genius"). This old mug came with me to University years and years ago to remind me of home, and was used constantly until it acquired a chip and the glaze started to go. Not the most flattering description of Yorkshire folk perhaps, who do have an undeserved (mainly) reputation for being:
* miserly, mean, stingy, close, tight, sparing, grasping, parsimonious, niggardly, penurious, close-fisted, tight-arse (taboo slang), tight-arsed (taboo slang), mingy (Brit. informal), tight-ass (U.S. taboo slang), tight-assed (U.S. taboo slang), snoep (S. African informal), tight as a duck's arse (taboo slang)
Not as good as DZ's cuss-mug but I like the shape and colour if not the sentiments. For those unlucky enough to be born outside God's own county the translation is:
Yorkshire motto:
Hear all, see all, say nothing,
Eat all, drink all, pay nothing,
And if ever you do anything for nothing,
Always do it for yourself.
