I wasn't expecting the trumpet!

This is the first in a series of portraits I'm doing about migration.

Born in Japan I am drawn to Ken's gardening skills as a metaphor for his sense of place. The large leaves belong to a plant he introduced to has flat in a small pot plant not many months ago. It now occupies the whole height of the room.

I had discussed with him what he had brought with him as a link to his childhood but the trumpet hadn't cropped up in conversation.

Not a conventional instrument to play in Tokyo in the early eighties.
