Pictorial Allsorts

In The Land of Dixie

Off to Georgia this afternoon on the cigarette run to a store in St Marys that is appropriately called El Cheapo.

With supplies duly bought, my wife and I headed for the historic part of the town. Usually, we park down by the waterfront but today we stopped outside Orange Hall, which is now a museum.

This ante-bellum mansion dates from c1829 and is considered a fine example of Greek revival architecture. Orange Hall was so named because of the orange trees planted around it.

It was built for the Rev Horace Pratt who was installed as the first pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, across the road, in 1822. The church was built by public subscription in 1802 and was incorporated as the First Presbyterian Church of St Marys in the Georgia Presbytery on December 5, 1832.

The things you can learn from historical markers. :-)
