Shipley Glen

We were orienteering close to home this morning in Shipley Glen. This is a steep sided valley strewn and edged with crags and boulders. It always brings back memories of childhood for me because it was a popular Sunday picnic spot for working class families. Before we had our first car, mum and dad would take us on the bus to Saltaire (now a World Heritage Site) and we would walk through Robert's Park to the Glen Tramway. This was an exciting ride up through Hirst Wood to the top of the Glen on the open carriages. Our own children enjoyed visiting Father Christmas in his grotto at the top of the tramway after the ride up. Then it was time to play amongst the crags and picnic on one of the flat stones on top of the Glen, chicken and potato salad were favourites!
