Kids gone to school today and the house seems strangely quite. Outside though it's like every goose in the world is hanging out in the fields. The noise is amazing.

Most of them are Greylag and although they are quite nice to have around from a photography point of view, its not much fun for the famers as they make right mess of the fields. At the last survey there were over 68 thousand wintering in Orkney, thought to be 2 thirds of the Icelandic breeding population.

They can be shot and plenty of people do so. Although most folk I know say they are pretty tough eating. Our neighbouring farmer has bird scarers and is often to be seen chasing them away on his quad bike but even he seems to be leaving the to rummage away in the snow for the time being.

Off to the panto tonight. Looking forward to it, especially as I haven't been out of the house for a few days.
