Imagine all those chimneys pouring out smoke. It wasn't called Auld Reekie for nothing.

'The city is affectionately nicknamed Auld Reekie[6] (Scots for Old Stinky or Old Smoky), because the open sewers of the Old Town led to strong odours across the city, and, when buildings were heated by coal and wood fires, chimneys would spew thick columns of smoke into the air.'
