Wednesday 29 December 2010: Midwinter

Since stoneage times the people of these isles have marked the position of the setting of the midwinter sun. Giant stones stand black against the last light of the sun whilst long passages into ancient cairns channel the golden rays to fill mysterious chambers.

Nowadays of course we just make do with a handy electricity pole.
