Blackcurrants

Went picking blackcurrants today. A family friend has a blackcurrant patch behind a garden shed and she rang last night to say they were ready for picking. So off we went this morning.
Not a very nice day - overcast, drizzly and misty so not really conducive to picking but we didn't want the forecast rain over the next couple of days to spoil the whole crop so took our chances.
As it turned out when we got there the job was already done and all we had to do was enjoy a wander around the garden, partake in a simple lunch, and bring the currants home to destalk, clean and boil up for preserves which will boost our palates in mid winter. Easy.

The smell of blackcurrant preserve has filled the house and I feel sure that we will be getting our daily required intake of Vitamin C just by breathing in deeply.

I love blackcurrants. So dark and rich and velvety and aromatic.......bloody good on porridge or icecream or waffles or.............
