Sunday 9 January 2011: A walk down the Rae

We went in search of the River Rae, to walk into town, or so we thought. Joining it at Cannon Hill Park proved to be impossible - the way down was locked, and as we walked parallel we realised there is very little public pathway next to the river. Walking parallel took us through some areas we wouldn't normally come across, sadly none that were particularly redemptive. This is near Edgbaston cricket ground, a down and out building with the shadow of a nearby church parapet.

We did however stumble across Beorma, which I was reading about recently - the area of Birmingham named after the tribe of Beorma (so legend has it) and its Anglo Saxon founder in the 7th century. This area is apparently due for a multi-million pound regeneration effort soon, which will no doubt provide a glossy exterior on what is a pretty run down area - but will also remove some historic bits of the city. Still, if I lived there, I'd probably welcome regeneration.
