Tuesday 11 January 2011: Who Was That Masked ... Lapwing?

"I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something."

- Richard Feynman

I've noticed these birds around the back of the hospital a few times before - once having a loud squawk at one of our nurses ;-) I managed to get close enough for a few half-decent shots, and using my Field Guide to the Birds of Australia (thanks mother!) identified it as a Masked Lapwing (vanellus miles) - race novaehollandiae, "spur-winged plover".

I realise I don't know any more about it for knowing its name though ;-)
