Too old to die young

La Vega

This was taken just outside Carmona in what is known as the Vega of Andalucia. In days gone by these would have been meadows but now they are cultivated mostly with wheat. A little further east towards Granada it is mostly olive groves. I love this part of the country, you can see for miles and at certain times of the year the countryside is a mass of red poppies. There are just the odd farms dotted around, many of which are now abandoned. I assume because the farm families now live in villages and towns and no longer in isolated farm houses miles from the nearest schools and shops. Most farmers now have four wheel drives to get to work.
Great day again today. We travelled through wonderful countryside. Apart from the Vega we went to some beautiful towns and eventually made it to the Laguna of the Fuente de Piedra, where we saw thousands of fantastic flamingos, and loads of other water birds and cranes. W managed to get a great shot of a blackwinged stilt. There were many of those too. We did not get very close to the flamingoes but fortunately there were some birders there who let is look through their very powerful binoculars and it made us appreciate how many there were and how lively the colony was. Lots of comings and goings. We are now in Granada and have an early morning booking in the Alhambra, so it's time for bed.
