Big swell in the Pentland Firth

Lovely Saturday! Spent time with my family in the morning and had lively walk in Dunnet Forrest then in the afternoon I went for a cliff top walk out to Holborn Head. When I passed Scrabster harbour (featured in journal yesterday) in was glassy calm. Twenty minutes walk later I was at the Headland. Although there was zero wind and few waves there was a big swell running from the north west. The only bit of land between here and Iceland in that direction is the Faroe islands! So with such a long fetch there was a lot of pent up energy released as the swell crashed against the cliffs!

The lone fulmar seen flying near the mouth of the cave gives an idea of the scale of the cliff which forms an impressive stack. It is about one and a half times as high again. Quite a few fulmar about, assorted gulls, a few geese flying north and shags. Got lots of good blips and spent ages trying to decided which one to post - but this one best shows the wildness of the place and the energy in the sea.
