The Edge of the Wold

A young coal tit waits to be fed.

The bird feeders are emptying more quickly now than in the Winter. I filled one up at 0900 this morning, and it was empty again by midday. The tiny little coal tits are largely responsible. There are at least two families flitting about the garden, the adults are working hard feeding the fledglings, and they are pursued everywhere by the noisy little youngsters. This is one of them waiting for a parent to reappear. The little ones have just the faintest tinge of yellow around the cheeks and on the chest, while the adults are grey and white.

The garden has been alive with bird families today: starlings, blue tits, chaffiches and house sparrows. There was even a young tree sparrow on the feeder this afternoon.

It was another windy day, but after a wet start the sun did eventually shine. Wifie and I went for a walk over Arnside Knott to Far Arnside this afternoon, we had a cup of tea in Holgates, then back via Arnside Tower. We were hoping to see some hares, but there were none in Harefield Parrock where they usually are. I'm still trying to get a good shot of one.
