Is this child labor?

The only reward is my praise and the feeling of accomplishment when he eats the food. And Mom writes messages of his choice in the dough. Tonight's cornbread topping had vent holes with the message, "Bob Loves Toys."

On a sad note, my camera is ill. It is a little Canon SD700 and just this evening started making crunching sounds when the lens moves & sometimes the lens will not go back in. James thinks it is a fatal flaw. I am hoping it is a little flour grinding among the lenses and will work its way out. Perhaps I should not keep the camera nearby when I cook, or let the 2 year old take pictures with it, or put it in my pocket...

Here's the recipe for Southwest Chicken Pot Pie
Cornmeal Pastry
1 cup flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup cold water

Mix all ingredients but the water in a food processor until it becomes crumbly (you can do this with a pastry cutter or knives, or your hands, too). Then add the water to help it come together. Shape it in to a ball, wrap it in plastic & put it in the fridge until the filling is ready. Preheat the oven to 350F. Lightly oil a 9x13 inch pan.

Filling
4 Scallions, chopped
3 carrots, diced
2 teaspoons chili powder
3 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup chicken broth
3 cups cooked chicken (I poach the chicken), cubed
1 can drained & rinsed black beans (15 oz)
About 10 oz corn (canned or frozen or cut off the cob)
1 can (4oz) diced green chilies
1/4 teaspoon salt (depending on the saltiness of your broth)

Melt the butter over med-high heat & add the scallions & carrots.
Cook about 5 minutes w/ occasional stirring.
Add the flour & cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
Add the milk & broth, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens (a few minutes more).
Add cooked chicken, black beans, & green chilies.
Pour in to the 9x13 inch pan.

Roll out the pastry & place over the filling. Cut some vent holes (this is where Bob and I get imaginative).

Bake for 40 minutes until the top is golden and the mixture is bubbling throughout.
