Tapas in Aachen

So, we woke up in the North Sea, then drove through the Netherlands, popped over to Germany for lunch before skipping through Belgium and Luxembourg and finally into France. We had intended to overnight in or near Luxembourg, but overshot a little and ended up in Dijon.

Anyway: Germany. Mr B wanted to go to Aachen to see the cathedral, started by Charlemagne. It's very old. This stained glass window is from 1414. I had somehow missed the sign on the way in that asked for payment of 2 euros to take photos, so was accosted by a very officious official. I declined to pay. It wasn't the money, but the principle: here are ancient and very precious paintings and mosaics; the site is World Heritage protected and yet for 2 euros I would be allowed to use my flash as much as I liked, disturbing the mood and probably damaging ancient artworks. My German's not up to explaining that though (never got much beyond zwei beirs bitte) so I just put my camera away.

Great lunch in Aachen though - we found a tapas restaurant, so had the bizarre experience of speaking Spanish in Germany.
