Britannia Panopticon Music Hall, Trongate, Glasgow

Doors Open Day in Glasgow. Blip Heaven. Took nearly 300 photos, so big decision on what to post in my journal.

The Britiannia Panopticon (1857-1938) is the oldest surviving music hall in Britain. In 1896 it was one of the first buildings to offer "Cinema". Stan Laurel made his debut here in 1906; Dan Leno, Sir Harry Lauder and Jack Buchanan performed here. The interior still retains much of the original music hall balcony, seating, projection box and stage beneath a vaulted ceiling.

Actors were out in Trongate, pointing visitors down New Wynd to enter the building. I took a sepia effect shot of old films being shown. There were displays of period costume, but the highlight for me was the lady playing old music hall tunes on a hammered dulcimer. It brought the whole place alive.

Southside Snapper visited earlier this week, and inspired me to visit today.
