Windmill Week - Day 4 - Wilhelmina

This morning I went to a little village called Thesinge, to photograph the grain mill 'Germania'. Unfortunately, the mill is being renovated at the moment and the cap and sails are currently removed. This left me with no time before work...

After work I visited the 'Wilhelmina', which is also a grain mill. Built in 1907, it is the highest mill in the province of Groningen. It was built to replace another windmill that was lost in a fire. Over the years, lots of parts from other windmills have been used to keep the Wilhelmina up and running. Many people think that the mill is named after Dutch queen Wilhelmina, but this is not the case: it was named after the wife of one of the owners of the mill.

In the shot that I have chosen, you can only see part of the mill. The entire mill can be seen in this shot.

The 'Wilhelmina' has its own website, on which you can find a movie that shows how the mill works. The movie is in Dutch, but the footage is nice even without understanding the words...

Windmill week started here.
